Inca Wayra, “The Inca’s Wind”

Inca Wayra, “The Inca’s Wind” is a group directed by Juan Ore, and is a staple of the DC Latino community for Andean Music.  For the past 25 years the quintet has entertained and kept the Andean music alive in international community festivals in Montgomery County, MD, Arlington and Richmond, VA and Washington DC. In addition Inca Wayra has presented several times at the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian(NMAI) Link: https://youtu.be/2Z8PZ8XK_sk?t=32m50s as well as in area restaurants and private events.
For the program, they will play a variety of songs not only from their native Peru but also from Bolivia and other South American countries.

Honoree’s for the 2018 Feria del Barrio

Each year, Feria honors community heroes that have served our community in one of three areas: Education, Economic Development, and Arts and Culture. This year our heroes are two leaders in Philadelphia Latino Arts and Culture: Suzzette Ortiz and Jose Luis “Tino” Serrano. We honor them for their commitment to promoting Puerto Rican and Latino music in Philadelphia and beyond

Suzzette is an internationally renowned pianist, singer, arranger and composer from Bayamón, Puerto Rico. She is currently the Artistic Director at AMLA music school where she strives to create social change through music by increasing awareness and appreciation of world cultures.

Ms. Ortiz is considered one of the premier female pianists in the tri-state area. She has collaborated with word class musicians such as Tito Puente, Compay Segundo (Buena Vista Social Club), Eddie Palmieri, and Tito Nieves, among others. She has also recorded with many local music groups. Four years ago, she recorded with Orquesta La Paz from Philadelphia and their album, “Déjà Vu” was nominated for 4 Latin Grammys.

Tino is a Philadelphia salsa legend who has partnered with Feria since 1992. He founded the Children’s Percussion workshop “Los Rumberitos de la Cinco” at AMLA and has shared his talents with numerous nonprofits and educational institutions throughout the city.

As a community advocate, Tino has served as a music educator in schools of North Philadelphia, including Eugenio Maria de Hostos Charter School, Julia de Burgos Elementary, and Thomas A. Edison High School. Also, he has been a workshop facilitator for community initiatives of Taller Puertoriqueño and Asociación de Puertoriqueños en Marcha. His objective is to expand his music worldwide and let everyone hear the beauty of Latin music.
